I’m not sure if you’ve ever heard of the phrase “clawing at the wall”, but it’s something I’ve done quite often lately. I think it’s because I’m trying to convince myself that I really enjoy the rainy weather, but the grey skies and chilly temperatures are getting to me. So I booked flights to Hawaii and started researching adventurous things to do in Honolulu.

Always wear sunscreen And because chances are good you’ll take a swim in the tropics, make sure to pick out reef-safe sunscreen before your trip. The reason? The actives in traditional sunscreen cause irreversible damage to reefs. Don’t be a jerk and buy this sunscreen before your trip.

Carry sanitizer with you

It’s the age of COVID, baby – sanitizer for the victory. I love these little guys, we found them on a flight and we now buy them in bulk whenever we travel. Super simple and easy to pack, We never left the hotel without it.

After sunrise, take your dog for a walk along the beach or head to the nearest coffee shop for a morning pick-me-up. We went to Whole Foods for an early breakfast bite and stopped by a local café for Americanos before heading out for the day.

The 0.8-mile hike is steep but manageable. Come early to beat the crowds, or go later to enjoy the sunset.

Don’t let Pearl Harbor fool you into thinking it’s only for history buffs. You can take the time to visit this historical site during your trip. I was surprised to find out that you can get a free ride to the USS Arizona if you book ahead.

But, we didn’t know that we needed to reserve tickets in advance so we got lucky. We showed up an hour after it opened, and were immediately put on a waiting list. Give yourself about an hour or two to absorb the significance of this moving memorial. This place is one of the most adventurous things to do in Honolulu.

#4. Catch Sunset at Waikiki Beach

Waikiki Beach is a beautiful thing. Just when you think it couldn’t get better than a golden Hawaiian beach, you’ll notice Diamond Head looming in the background. But believe me, when I say it’s even more amazing, Waikiki Beach is phenomenal at sunset, don’t miss it!
I don’t want to paint a fake picture here, it gets extremely crowded at sunset, but this is an experience not to be missed.

#5. Grab drinks at Duke’s Bar

Since we’re friends, I’m letting you in on another little secret – just when you think it gets no better than sunset from Waiki Beach, I say swing by Duke’s Bar (right on Waiki Beach) for sunset cocktails.

Arguably the most famous bar (on the most famous beach) in adventurous things to do in Honolulu – Duke’s Bar offers great drinks in an atmosphere that is hard to beat! Come here for sunset (arrive one hour early because the wait may get long) for an uncomplicated evening you’ll remember forever. This is one of the most adventurous things to do in Honolulu.

Before we visited Hanauma Bay, I had no idea that it charged an entrance fee. However, after visiting, I realized that it was absolutely worth it! Not only did we get to see amazing sights such as sea turtles and schools of colorful fish, but we also got to enjoy the beauty of the beach. I would definitely recommend Hanauma Bay to anyone who wants to spend a day relaxing on the beach.

#7. Get an acai bowl from Island Vintage Coffee

I found Island Vintage Coffee on my last day on Oahu and felt bad about missing out on it before I left. So, I swung by and was surprised to find that they were pretty much packed.

But, I didn’t mind waiting in line because I knew that once I got inside, I would get a good cup of coffee. And, I was right. When I returned the next morning, I had to wait in line for over an hour again. But, I was glad that I went back because I got to enjoy another great cup of coffee.

#8. Get brews at Waikiki Brewing Company

We stayed at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, which is just a short walk from Waikiki Brewing Co., so we decided to stop in for lunch. When we arrived, we were greeted by friendly staff who offered us complimentary beer samples. After ordering our food, we enjoyed watching the surfers out on the beach.

#9. Visit Byodo-In Temple

adventurous things to do in Honolulu’s Buddhist temple Byodo-it is a place of peace and tranquility. Located in the Valley of the Temple Memorial Park, the temple was built in honor of the 100th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Hawaii.

Since then, the temple has become one of my favorite places to visit. The grounds are absolutely stunning and the architecture is incredible. We spent about two hours wandering around the grounds and taking photos. It was truly a great experience.

One of my favorite things to do when visiting a new city is ask locals about their favorite spots to eat and play. Over the years, we have found a lot of unexpected gems by following up on local recommendations, and Rainbow Drive-In was no exception!
